Here difference is celebrated, here outcasts sit at the center of things. What people in the rest of the Human Sphere call sin, here they call virtue. What other nations deem illegal, is not only tolerated here, but business is done with it.
Bakunin, the everlasting feast, the lecherous mothership, the altar of the senses and pleasures where, every day, the moral restraints of staid society are sacrificed. Radical science, ungodly technology, transgressive solutions, these are the product for the big international market, which doesn’t ask questions because it prefers not to know and to keep on purchasing. Quality entertainment to be exported, sensaseries, holoproductions, Mayazines, and extreme entertainment for local consumers: Aristeia! Underground, combats with chimeras and biomodified creatures, illegal races for the network Arachne. Innovative clothing for the Sphere’s fashion industry, and biosynthetic bodies modified and customized to suit the tastes of the consumers who visit the mothership. VaudeVille, the palace of sex, amorality, and debauchery; and the Observance, the chapter house of the rigid and strict cult of Saint Mary of the Knife, Our Lady of Mercy. All rolled up into a single heterogeneous package, all of it in a single mothership.
This is Bakunin, the balance of extremes, but also an ever-changing environment. Here everything changes, very few things are forever. In the past, the Observance used to be a secretive and mysterious congregation that skulked in the shadows of Praxis and worked together with the most ominous agencies of the Nomad Nation. Now it remains just as secretive and mysterious, but the Observants have decided to come to the fore after thwarting a major infiltration attempt by ALEPH on Bakunin. They have stepped in to fill the power vacuum left by the traitors and sellouts, who they executed, and have become a true powerhouse in the mothership. Now, the congregants of the Observance have stepped forward, wielding their profound hatred for ALEPH, to prevent that which came so close to fruition, the AI taking control of Bakunin’s fate, from ever happening again. Thanks to them, Bakunin now knows exactly who the real enemy is, who is truly seeking to destroy the mothership, and it has realized that the Observance will always be there to defend it.
Things have changed, but the party is still raging, and the revolution is still alive and kicking, just with some fiercer protectors. Welcome, stranger, you’ll be safe here.

Orphans of the Observance (Engineer)
As a result, many of these Hospices' wards become tactical members of the Observance, and they are called Orphans to honor and remember where they came from.
Under the tutelage of elite operatives such as the Observants and the Reverends, the Orphans become first-level assets capable of supporting the forces of the Observance, and they may also act as specialist reinforcements for Bakunin’s Moderator Corps in accordance with the Cooperation Agreement between the Bakunin Jurisdictional Command and the Observance.
The Orphans bring special skills to the table that the regular Moderator forces are unable to provide.
Reverend Moiras (HMG, MULTI Sniper)
“You have opened fire on a Reverend Sister. That is a sin. A mortal sin that requires a shriving of lead and steel. Your penance is your blood!”
Reverend Moira Sophia Negreponti. Unlawful raid on the MagnaObra Artificial Intelligence Research Compound, the use of which had been granted to ALEPH. This operation is currently under scrutiny by the High Court of O-12.
In primitive Greek mythology, the Moirai or Parcae were ruthless avengers who enforced fate and punished the crimes of men and gods alike. Reverends are the elite among Bakunin’s assault commandos. They train with the Corregidor Intruders and receive specific instruction in the multi-environmental modules of Praxis.
Reverend Moiras never desist in their terrible wrath until bitter punishment has been exacted on those guilty of crimes against the righteous - faithful Humanity.
Reverend Cenobites (Chain Rifle, Heavy Rocket Launcher)
Defending the Telesterion is the ultimate purpose and the raison d’être of the Reverend Cenobites. They are the heart of the Observance.
Cenobites don’t allow themselves to behold any beauty other than the inside of their cenoby, so they’ve all been implanted with a vision filter that activates the moment they leave their conventual module.
Cenobites are among the most lethal warriors in the Human Sphere, with hundreds of notches on their hallowed weapons. However, these Reverends’ greatest tactical advantage lies in their fierceness in battle, their disregard for danger, and above all in their notorious sadism. Fear is one of the most powerful weapons of the Cenobites, as everyone knows of their predilection for pain and atrocity.
Reverend Healers Doctor (Vulkan Shotgun)
“God is merciful and kind. Unfortunately for you, I am not God but a Reverend Healer.”

Don’t let the name fool you, their full title is Reverend Healer-Killer. The true purpose of these women is to heal the Sphere of the Evil within by extirpating it all together.
The Observance sees it as their duty as representatives of Our Lady of Mercy to create a corps of adepts trained in field medicine to help those innocents caught in the crossfire of the battle against the great Evil that is ALEPH.
Their task is not only to keep their Reverend sisters alive for the fray but to join them in the fight. Healers are expected to be the surgeon wherever the malignant tumor is found, to be the scalpel to Moira’s sword.
Reverend Custodiers Hackers
The Observance has its own information warfare and quantronic attack specialists: the Reverend Custodiers.
They’re tactical combat hackers, the forefront of the struggle against the unremitting menace that is ALEPH and a key component of the protective framework that keeps the Nomad networks online and safe. In action, Custodiers are dynamic and markedly aggressive.
The training needed to engage in the full spectrum of their demanding operational profile would be mind-bogglingly intensive and rigorous. Many are shocked by the youth of most Reverend Custodiers, a consequence of the high casualty rate of their job, but at those clock speeds anyone who survives a minute against Aspects and ALEPH operators come out a seasoned veteran by default.
Penitent Observants
In the Observance, all those who have failed in their duty, or in their devotion and commitment to the Holy Virgin Saint Mary of the Knife, or to the Observance and its mission, must become a metanoon, or penitent, in order to cleanse their transgressions.
All those who have committed major offenses but have outstanding tactical skills or show some potential are consecrated as Penitent Observants, after overcoming and enduring a training period that makes them ready to work with the RRU Stampfer.
The Penitents learn to use their pain as the focus of their concentration, and thus they achieve a level of efficiency that exceeds all known standards.
These Observants operate in a trance-like state, with all their senses focused on their mission so that nothing can distract them from it. For them, pain is the way to enlightenment and victory.
Sin-eater observants
Psychiatry manuals are full of terms whose definitions would fit Sin-Eater Observants like a glove. Would you expect otherwise from the acolytes of a hybrid cult between early Christian traditions and ancient Mediterranean paganism?
In a matriarchal cult such as this, the presence of men is tolerated as the result of a function with two parameters: pragmatism and the expiation of the male condition.
Male Observants exist to suffer, to cleanse the Observance of its sins and its faults, and thus guarantee that it remains pure and incorruptible in the path of The Truth of the Knife. To do this, Sin-Eaters submit themselves to brutal, intoxicating, mystic rituals of redemption, ecstasy, and pain whose origins are lost in the mists of time.
