The secession of Great Independent Japan, and the fact that Kuraimori was doomed to complete social and economic marginalization, represented Korea’s golden opportunity to ascend to a position of greater leadership within the StateEmpire. To be sure, it could never truly compete with the influence and power of the Han elite, which is the dominant force within Yu Jing, but it could certainly enjoy more prominence in the highest echelons of power. The fate of the StateEmpire was to rise to primacy in the Human Sphere, and Korea was to be the key to making this possible. It was Korea’s destiny, a destiny dictated by its ambition.
They also bring this ambition to the battlefield. Korean troops are notable for their determination to achieve victory at any cost. For them, victory is the only option, so they always fight tooth and nail and give their all. And each and every one of them is more than willing to do so, because their commitment to their homeland is unwavering.
The real prowess of Korean troops is evidenced by the fact that they have replaced the disbanded Japanese Sectorial Army naturally and effectively, thus becoming the assault force of the StateEmpire Army. Since the Uprising, there has been no Yu Jing victory without Korean emblems on the holofootage.
For this to happen, Korean forces must be present in every deployment of the StateEmpire Army. The best way to achieve this goal was to create a support force that would be present everywhere: the so-called Emergency Support Forces, which, thanks to its members’ bravery, ended up being more widely known by a much more colorful name.
These Emergency Support Forces are operational groups scattered throughout sensitive areas that have been designated by the StateEmpire High Command, so they have become the most highly available strategic elements of the Yujingyu army. As mandated by Directive 8/2197 of the Ministry of Defense, their mission was to become a swift and flexible first-response tool for crisis situations and conflicts that require the deployment of military units, one that can also intervene in peacekeeping operations in which Yu Jing is involved, as well as provide their military support to allied units in need of assistance.
It’s precisely these sort of operations, assisting other Yujingyu units, where the Emergency Support Forces have truly excelled, which earned them the code name they have been given by mass media: the Daebak Force. In Korean, “daebak” means “awesome” or “big win,” a colloquial term to express admiration, so it’s an apt nickname that these forces truly deserve.
Dokkaebi Cyberteam
Korean society is extremely competitive. From the beginning of their formal education and after they move into the labor market, Korean citizens are under pressure in every social sphere. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that this competitiveness has infected Mayagaming too, spawning a strong gaming culture and a bunch of gamers internationally recognized as the finest in the entire Sphere.
With such a mindset, it isn’t surprising that the military decided to tap into these gamers’ potential, just as the private sector has. Exploiting the capabilities of remote presence units and building on the achievements of the Karakuri Project developed by the Rokkaku keiretsu and the tech implemented in the Su-Jian Program, engineers from the R&D department of the Jangjeom (장점, ‘advantage’) chaebol developed the Inhyeong (인형, ‘doll’) series.
These android units allowed gamers to put their skills to use straight away in tactical actions in the field, without any training other than the purely operational, omitting the physical side of it, thus reducing training time and speeding up the deployment of new recruits into combat.
The Inhyeong combined with their skills turn these gamers into deadly operatives with superhuman abilities. However, even if Inhyeong units are highly commendable, these Mayagamers’ skills constitute the main competitive advantage of the Dokkaebi Haptic Action Cyberteam.
Hwarang Corps
Leadership is the destiny of the best among the best, those who are compelled to always be at the forefront, leading the vanguard, and setting an example of wisdom, courage, and courtesy. In Yu Jing’s competitive Korean society, there’s no one finer than the executives of the chaebol, the name given to Korean corporations.
These executives constitute a de facto corporate aristocracy that, despite the StateEmpire’s efforts to promote inclusiveness and equality, still enjoys a series of privileges that are inherent to any social elite. Knowing that the Party does not approve of this state of affairs, but is unwilling to change anything, the chaebol have tried to smooth things over through public relations policies to tone down this image, at least in the eyes of the public. And no effort has been more successful than the Hwarang (화랑) Initiative.
As part of the StateEmpire Army, the Hwarang Corps is a unit that is usually deployed in active theaters of operations or assigned to combat-ready groups that are constantly on high alert, such as rapid response forces and immediate support units.
The Hwarang always exhibit their excellence on the front line, ready to sacrifice their lives for their nation in the name of the chaebol that has given them the opportunity to become the prime example of the best that Korean society has to offer. Combining their skills in age-old martial arts with the enhancements that their lightweight servopowered armor affords them, the Hwarang are fearsome adversaries, unstoppable once they engage in battle.
Nothing feels more dreadful than to see them emerge from the smoke and chaos of battle with their elegant finery smeared with the blood of their enemies. Because, even though Buddhism has taught them to feel compassion towards their opponents, the Hwarang won’t hesitate to strike down anyone who threatens their fellow citizens, as they are bound to do by honor and duty.
Sulyong Naval Operations Group
If there’s one legendary army unit in Korea’s recent military history, it’s the Korean Marine Corps. Its outstanding role in key operations during the Korean War in 1950-53, its bravery during the Vietnam War, and its resolve in the Border Conflicts of the 21st century were the foundation of its reputation, which was to be solidly established once it was incorporated into Yu Jing’s StateEmpire Army.
However times change, and with them the concept and scope of warfare itself does as well. It expands to new realms, such as aerospace combat, and so it was that the navies of the great powers moved from the seas to the darkness of the stellar void. As a result, the Korean Marines, since they are a branch of the Navy and their philosophy is to go where the enemy is, became experts in space combat and in zero-gravity operations.
This adaptation, which was more complex than it might seem, was carried out with the Korean Marines’ usual thoroughness and zeal, so that they were soon able to reach the same high standards of excellence they once achieved in amphibious operations, becoming one of the main assets of both the StateEmpire Navy and the Korean Sectorial Army.
Although new operational environments require new tactical responses, the Korean Marines succeeded in addressing these challenges. Faced with the ever-expanding setting of the entire Human Sphere, where their job to protect the interests of the StateEmpire, the Korean Marines, who were already operating as a rapid deployment force, created the Sulyong (수룡, “Sea Dragons”) Naval Operations Group, a unit made up of small, solid, highly specialized teams capable of hitting hard and carrying out special operations if necessary.
Sulsa Warriors
The Sulsa would infiltrate behind enemy lines and into encampments to gather the precious intelligence that ultimately gave the kingdom of Silla the upper hand and made it the victor of the Three Kingdoms period.
Once the Hwarang Initiative was well underway, chaebol executives realized that they could broaden its scope to train their own Sulsa, choosing the best among the Hwarang who displayed the necessary skills to become part of this elite corps. The Sulsa would make an excellent addition to the StateEmpire Special Operations Command, and more specifically, to the Korean Sectorial Army, thereby increasing the prestige of the corporate contribution to national security. Needless to say, this move disguised an additional opportunity: training their own experts in espionage, in an open and seemingly innocent manner, with no other justification than their commitment to the nation.
