Booster Pack O-12

Lynx Unit
The Lynx Unit is not among the most celebrated SWORDFOR unit; in fact, it’s practically unknown. You won’t find it listed on the Bureau Aegis’ site, nor does it appear among this organization’s job opportunities. There once was a reporter who wanted to write a feature article about the unit for the news agency BIBLIOTEK, and shortly after having disclosed his intentions was advised to desist and then sent to Svalarheima to cover economic news. This does not mean that the Lynx Unit is a secret unit in any way, rather that neither SWORDFOR nor its members like to draw attention to it because of its peculiar operational role. To serve in this unit, a specific psychological profile is required; applicants must be among that statistical two percent of the global population who have a true murderous instinct and have no qualms about killing. Put this way, it may sound too harsh, but we must understand that every organization needs to have both its heroes and its monsters. The heroes are the ones who operate in the open and represent the values of the organization.

The monsters are the ones ready to do whatever is necessary, usually covertly, so that the heroes can do their duty. The Lynx are Bureau Aegis’ particular monster and one of its few units with a license to kill. As it is a law enforcement agency, when SWORDFOR engages in police operations its priorities are always stopping the offenders and making arrests. However, this is not the case with the Lynx, who are always authorized to use lethal force, because if they are deployed it means that their commanders have already considered that such a course of action is necessary. They are a common sight in hostage situations, where they will act as elite shooters, either in the physical plane or in a data environment, where the choice of intervening and killing someone to save innocent lives must be made in a fraction of a second. The Lynx are also usually deployed in operations for which a termination with extreme prejudice has been requested, or in which the regular SWORDFOR forces may require a special and undetectable cover, both on the front line and in diplomatic situations. In any case, the kind of work the Lynx do, albeit necessary, is not good for public relations, so their presence in the area of operations tends to be kept totally invisible, especially when a situation attracts media coverage. This does not mean that the members of this unit or their commanders feel ashamed of their tactical role. On the contrary, this unit's precision and efficiency has earned them the codename Lynx, and being part of this elite group is a source of pride for any of them, even if they can’t publicly brag about it. As the Aegis agents like to say, “You may not have heard of them, and you may not be able to see them, but that doesn’t mean that the Lynx aren’t there and—by the time you notice their presence—it will already be too late.”
Psi-Cops
To protect the Human Sphere, intelligence is a necessity: namely, what is cooking and who is cooking it. Hence the need for O-12 to have an intelligence service. And hence the existence of the Psi Unit, the intelligence branch of Bureau Aegis, an agency dedicated to collecting data for both prosecutors and judges of Section Statera and for SWORDFOR agents. Hundreds of analysts and intelligence trackers collect and classify all kinds of data that may be vital for fighting crime and preserving the political-economic balance of the Sphere. However even today, in a quantronic society where everything can be found in the datasphere, it’s necessary to have ground agents searching recycling dumpsters, the secret compartments of desk drawers, or inside a safe. Of course, these tasks are better done discreetly, as they are usually illegal. But even if evidence obtained unlawfully isn’t admissible in court, it can still lead to gathering lawful evidence that puts a criminal in jail or placing a surveillance alert on any person or organization that may be dangerous to the balance of the Sphere. These are the kind of delicate tasks that cannot be entrusted to just anyone and for which the Psi Unit has agents whose codename is simply COps, an acronym for Covert Operatives, a generic term for direct-action, low-profile assets used in intelligence operations. This is the kind of highly versatile operative who is capable of many things, even killing if necessary, and always gets the job done. They’re the kind of agents who never question their orders because they trust the ideals of the Psi Unit, the epitome of such, since being a branch of Bureau Aegis its task is to act on behalf of the common good, of all the citizens of the Sphere, which includes their enemies. Hence their unofficial motto: “For your own good,” even if some of them cannot help but sound a little sarcastic when quoting it.

Razor Unit
The members of the Razor Reconnaissance Units are the kind of guys who you never hear coming until suddenly there they are, standing next to you, scaring you to death. But don’t worry, if they wanted you dead you wouldn’t even have noticed their presence. So it’s actually your lucky day, for two good reasons. On the one hand, you are still alive, congratulations! On the other hand, you got to see a Razor in action, something that few people can brag about. The only problem is that you won’t get to tell anyone. The Razors are commissioned to carry out operations of a secret and expeditious nature, sometimes so secret and expeditious that they fall within the definition of clandestine. Their training has been perfected for manhunt missions, nocturnal abductions, and the elimination of predesignated targets. As they are tasked with black ops, illegal and deniable, many Razors are “deceased” agents who work for Bureau Noir without badges or identification, in order to not compromise O-12 officially. In their less hostile aspect, these agents also engage in espionage operations and information gathering for the intelligence service and the prosecutors of Section Statera at Bureau Aegis. The Razors can boast being able to infiltrate and compromise any security detail with absolute ease.

This is largely due to their outstanding skill with stealth, but also thanks to their advanced technological equipment. Their battle suits are made of a mimetic fabric with adaptive properties, and are capable of inhibiting thermal and biometric signals. However, although secrecy and discretion are the main modus operandi of this unit, they are still ruthless and implacable when necessary. In those scenarios, the Razors strike hard and vanish into the shadows without a trace, as if they had never been there. Of course, that’s precisely what happened: they were never there; Bureau Aegis will never admit that they may have been there. And if anything went wrong, the only thing the enemy would have is the body of an agent who was actually officially already long dead. And of course, dead guys cannot work for anybody, much less for O-12.

Jayth Cutthroats, Shasvastii Independent Assault Group
The planets in Jayth’s system are characterized by their strong gravity and mineral wealth. So, following the standard Shasvastii colonial protocol, the Shasvastii expedition that arrived there adapted their physiology to the environment, making themselves sturdier and bulkier, and established a series of small mining colonies on the main planet, Jayth-1. The only obstacle they found was a local species of dangerous and very territorial burrowing creatures, the Taigha, which could at any emerge from out of nowhere in the Shasvastii’s subterranean cities or mining facilities with catastrophic consequences. However, the Shasvastii colonists from Jayth soon learned how to fight them and became tunnel warfare experts in the process. This way the colonies, even though separated from the rest of the Continuum, prospered while they waited for the Support and Colonial Liaison Fleet, the Shasvastii race’s security mechanism for all their remote system colonies. Unfortunately, the Jayth system was part of the Norasa Slavers’ route, which fell upon the unprepared colonies like birds of prey. Incapable of repelling a full Norasa fleet, the Jayth Shasvastii were enslaved and many of them carried far away to be sold, both for their exceptional physical qualities and for their special aptitudes for mining in strong gravity environments.

For more than thirty years they withstood the brutal Norasa regime, until, led by Shivaush—a charismatic rebel leader—the Jaythians rose up in arms, fighting a fierce and bloody guerrilla war within the tunnels and corridors of Jayth’s subterranean cities. For more than fifteen years, these rebels, known as Cutthroats, kept their oppressors in check, until the arrival of the Support and Colonial Liaison Fleet. With the fleet’s help they managed to bring down the horrible slaver regime. However, after so many years of war, many of those Jaythian Cutthroats only knew killing and fighting, tasks in which they excelled thanks to their hardy constitution and tenacity forged over years in a war against an absolutely merciless enemy. The naval command of the Support Fleet, impressed by the physical characteristics of the Jaythians, unheard of among the Shasvastii, quickly offered them a place on their ship-boarding and assault teams. The Cutthroats however have not been able to adapt to the discipline of the Shasvastii Expeditionary Forces, and remain as an independent assault team recruited solely among the Jayth miners, used to risking their lives against the Taigha. Either as naval boarding or assault teams, the cutthroats make a distinct unit, one with their own rules and traditions. Their customs and procedures originate from the hard mining environment they come from, such as the “Pit Patrols” with tamed Taighas, as well as from their guerrilla-fighter background and hunting in the dark, like their gruesome custom of finishing off all of their enemies by cutting their throats.
Tensho Experts
It is logical to think that a civilization that has suffered a great cataclysm that almost led it to extinction has developed emergency management specialized mechanisms. The Tensho Experts are one of the most visible elements of the so-called Denavashii, or General Survival Plan, a disaster planning and management program developed during the turbulent epoch following the great tragedy of Shasvastii, when the few surviving Shasvastii colonies were on the verge of extinction. of extinction. Originally, the Tensho was a special civilian corps of experts in disaster management, with the function of organizing and coordinating relief and rescue efforts at the tactical level in the event of any disaster that would endanger the survival of the colony. In the Shasvastii society, the Tensho are considered authority figures and are identified thanks to the Kushii, a cranial device for multispectral communication and advanced logistics management with a comlog link. The presence and quantity of these experts is determined according to the population density of each Shasvastii settlement. However, the proliferation of military colonies would force the Expeditionary Forces to assimilate members of this corps, who would receive military instruction to operate with the regular troops. Like their civilian counterparts, the Tensho of the Expeditionary Forces wear a Kushii, and the veterans are authorized to personalize them. However, in combat, all of them prefer to camouflage their Kushii to avoid attracting the attention of enemy snipers on them—wise advice from a survival specialist.

Noctifers: Special Tactical Dominance Wing
Noctifers have sophisticated devices for hiding, along with a varied collection of mid-range and long-distance weapons. Their preference for nighttime activities is why they have received this code name from human troops. Moving around like invisible demons, these creatures have been created to be stealthy and cruel. They are always willing to use the dirtiest, most disgraceful tricks necessary to win a battle.

Equipe Mirage-5

Lieutenant Margot Berthier, Equipe Mirage-5
“The attacks will strike like lightning, they will arrive like thunder and will finish before anybody can react.”
-Operational doctrine of the Mirage Teams. “Comme l’éclair” (Like Lightning). A reduced version of it in its insignia.

The Mirage Teams are small teams of special forces troops, created originally by the Merovingian Army to perform military operations denoted as “surgical”. Mirage missions tend to be fast, very violent, and spectacular, with stealth a secondary consideration. Mirage Teams constantly face high risks and accept an elevated casualty count as their due. The Mirage-5 Team, formed by Berthier and Duroc, is one of the oldest and most successful teams. Lieutenant Margot Berthier was once an NCO in the Merovingian airborne troopers, passing from there to the Special Operations Command of the Ariadnan Army’s Military Intelligence. As a Mirage unit leader, she headed an airborne shock commando troop in the Ariadna Exemption Zone, launching extremely successful attacks against PanOceanian forces trying to advance in the area. However, the commando group lost strength rapidly due to the high-risk rate. After six months of operations, the only survivors of the commando group were her and another NCO, so the unit was disbanded. Trying to overcome the deaths of her comrades, Margot requested a transfer to the Moblots, the Merovingian heavy infantry. The new environment helped her to calm down and polish her combat skills. When she felt restored, Margot came back for Intelligence. A few missions later, she recovered her Mirage Team status. In Intelligence circles, she is the only operative to be readmitted to the Mirage Teams after a leave of absence. Berthier has the reputation of being a shrewd, tough and sly officer, and an excellent shot as well. She has a personal and deadly style, characterized by her absolute precision and an almost perverse apparent lack of effort. In one of her missions she met Duroc, saw his potential, and recruited him to the Mirage Teams. Since then, they have constituted a tight tactical team, covering each other’s backs. Margot is the brains and the markswoman of the team, while Duroc is the muscle and provides the psychological impact of extreme and sudden violence.
Sergent Duroc, Equipe Mirage-5
“I can tear a guy’s leg off by its roots, and use it to smack down sixteen of his buddies… It was a useful skill when I was behind bars… I suppose that’s the reason why they want me to be in the army […] Yes, they say my work is nothing but smashing and killing…but I prefer to call it something like… staff reduction or… cleaning house.”
-Extract from the evaluation interview of Duroc for the Mirage Teams.

Duroc is one of the few Dogfaces capable of performing combat jumps, with a parachute or from a helicopter. The instinctive fear of flying most Dogfaces suffer, and the stress and excitement of imminent combat, normally provokes their violent transmutation to Dog-Warriors, with unfortunate consequences for vehicles and their crew. Sergeant Duroc has no more willpower than any other Dogface, but the presence of Lieutenant Berthier has a remarkably relaxing effect on his state of mind. Of Corsican descent, Angelo Lafayette Duroc fits the pure Corsican stereotype - a creature of violent passions and terrible revenge. Duroc was too aggressive to be part of a Dog-Bowl team—and you have to be off the brutality scale to be forbidden to play—so he served four years in a Dog-Warrior regiment assigned to Tartary. When he was fed up with the discipline, he left the regiment to become a boxing instructor for the Navy School at Dalniy. In his free time, he worked as an enforcer for a local underworld boss, until he went too far on a job and served five years in jail for homicide. Once he was out of prison, he recovered from his former job and took up the old routine of violence and alcohol. When commissioned to take care of a female Merovingian agent asking too many questions around the docks, he assumed it would be an easy job. However, the agent was better than he expected, and for the first time, Duroc failed to carry out a contract, falling into his own trap. At this point, logic and hard-boiled literature would dictate that Duroc should have died. But, for some mysterious reason, Margot spared his life. Full of admiration for her, and knowing that his position was questionable after being captured, Duroc decided to take the bull by the horns and help the beautiful agent. When the mission was completed, Margot sought the readmission of the ex-Dog-Warrior to his former regiment but ended up transferring him to the Mirage Teams. Since then, Duroc carries out high-risk missions for the Ariadnan Army alongside Margot, and he doesn’t mind flying, as long as she is by his side.
