Six micro-stories about Liang Kai

We have recently carried out a micro-stories contest on Facebook as a way of trying to have a good time in this difficult moment we are all going through.

The result has been amazing! The quality and creativity of the short tales have impressed us. Thank you very much for your participation to everyone in writing, reading, or voting!

Below, you can read the six stories that were the most voted by all of you.

Alper Cibili

Winner

“PanO was a mistake!

They are arrogant, selfish, and greedy. They carry the attributes that I hate most.” thought Liang Kai.

“On the other hand, Yu Jing was intolerant, jealous, and obsessive. It was a mistake to assist Yu Jing, too.

Even though the purpose was the greater good, collaborating with both sides of the conflict brought nothing more than destruction,” he confessed to himself.

The Shaolin Monk raised his hand to silence the two operatives squabbling to convince him to support their latest agenda. Liang Kai talked for the first time in the negotiations.

“Gentlemen, you both are bickering too loud, thus you don’t pay attention to your surroundings.”

The Yu Jing delegate was quick-witted. “Yes, master. We should take care of the settlers. But…”

Liang Kai opened his eyes, “I didn’t mean that.”

All of a sudden, a violet blade sliced the two operatives. An alien figure took shape a meter away from the Shaolin monk. Liang Kai smiled, “Shasvastii, a worthy challanger, at last!”

Mathieu P Dussiaume

With one fluid motion, Liang Kai pulled the combi rifle from the Fusilier's grip with the hook of his sword and smashed a metal palm through his foe's sunglasses. The man was unconscious before the shower of shards blanketed the snow. Liang Kai's strike would not kill the man, but it would buy his team time to recover the stolen medical supplies. The final obstacle, he heard before he could see. Her cloak billowing in wind. Armored boots scraping the ice. He turned to see the visor aglow through the falling snow. Liang Kai readied his blade as the knight raised hers. This would be an enlightening confrontation.

He woke up in the night, remembering those demons that never let him be in true calm. Faces of people who saved before showed now cover in blood on his memories; smiles turned into twisted dead faces. Instant images that appear and disappear in less than a second.

An alarm turned on the lights on the passway. Without opening his eyes, Liang Kai stood up before a motley group of pirates and mercenaries.

-Is your cause fairer than the ones I protect? -asked Liang Kai.

The mercenaries, stunned, pointed their weapons upon him.

-I guess it isn't… -Liang Kai sentenced.

The garden burned.

For decades it had been a place of contemplation. The statue at its heart had been hundreds of years old.

He was supposed to rise above such things; to be beyond physical attachments. But Liang Kai saw the shattered monument and heard the begging of innocents he had killed, glimpsed the bodies he left in his wake.

The invaders moved through the destruction they had heedlessly wrought. They did not seem to care.

Hawkwood’s orders were far away. He leapt.

The Buddha’s head ground beneath his feet as he faced them.

72 Techniques?

He needed only one.

"Officially, we can't do anything. Company owns the land, judge says so, was bribed to. Us Peacekeepers can't interfere with local matters," The Officer said.

The small town a mile away was barricaded. A mile beyond, hired thugs sat waiting for a deadline.

"Unofficially… Company is a criminal front. They're going to claim the town shot first and things escalated. But if they get beaten back, we can take over."

Liang Kai kept his eyes on the town.

"So, can you help us?"

Even a mile away, fear on faces was clear….

"I can help them," Liang Kai promised.

Ben Jar

"What does a one handed clap sound like? " Kai asked the Brawler.

"Shut the f**k up man or I blow your head off"

The Brawlers rifle twitched betraying his nerves. At this point even the rowdiest patron of Zu's bar was silent.

"my boss got beef with you an I gonna give him your head"

"What does a one handed clap sound like? "

"F**k it, I'M GONNA KILL"

CRACK

The Brawler never saw Kai move, never saw the open hand strike that fractured his skull.

"That. That is what a one handed clap sounds like".

Omar Aazam

All three of the assailants dropped dead. A mere blink of an eye was sufficient for monk's muscle memory to perform the theatre of war and artistry that his training has equipped him with.

The steps echoed afar bouncing of the nearby pagoda, warning the warrior that the battle is far from over. Nearby explosion went unnoticed by Liang Kai as he leapt of the statue and landed amidst the charging Knights. Another blink of an eye and knights were no more.

There was only his inner peace amidst chaos.
